Being a novice in the art of weathering, and having only taken the plunge on a £16 boxcar, I hesitated about getting the paints out to attack an £80 scale model, even if I only paid £50 for it :banghead:

the trouble was that, out of the box, it looked a bit too 'fresh from the works' as it were

I haven't really perfected all of the right methods - but this seemed to go reasonaby well.

Mainly a selection of very thin washes (Tamiya acrylic paints), and then mxing some reddish browns that were a bit dirtier and faded than the orginal. 8|

Top it off with Humbrol matt varnish for acrylics, which tones things down quite nicely, and here we are. :D:D

Both of these weathering jobs have been done using washes of Tamiya acrylics.

The secret with this method is to start the wrong way round, and to do the grey first, then a wash of the faded colour, then pick out odd bits of the planks in the full colour - ie the bits of paint that have not 'flaked off'.

Using this method, you can also retriev odd bits of the original writing if you wish, so that some has 'flaked off' with the paint.

The bit thing that I didn't do on on the blue boxcar, because it started out black (but actually I should have done) was to line the joins between the planks with a wash of black, quickly wiping off the excess so that you get a good black shadw line in the grooves. I mastered this trick with the AMS wagon.

The last bit that I need to master, is the application of the colour onto the grey using a sponge so that the colour only touches the high spots, and the grey remains in the 'grain' of the plastic wood. This wouldn't have worked on the boxcar as there is only raised grain, not any indent.

For a complete, blow by blow account of weathering, ............................don't ask me, speak to Mel :happy:

I think part of the issue is, what aspect of weathering is trying to be achieved?

Weathering powders are good for applying a dirty, weathered, in-use look.

The acrylic washes, on wooden wagons, are good for achieveing a worn out, flaked paint job.

Worn out flaking paint on metal wagons is somehwere I have not yet been

Good work Ian, keep it up.

Just remember to paint the wheel faces, if you look at photos of new RR equipement its the wheels that are often the very first thing to rust. Even right off the factory floor the wheel faces will show a bright fresh rust colour!

All the best,
Gavin
