Hi,
The third wire is because there is a switch built into the charging sockets. - Similar to the headphone jack on a piece of audio equipment.

This switch interrupts the negative lead from the battery (black-wire) to the rest of the equipment (grey-wire) when the charger is plugged-in.

This means the equipment is protected from anything 'nasty' coming in from the charger, and the charge only sees the battery, so can make 'intelligent' decisions about what it is doing.
