I am converting an LGB Santa Fe Mikio to DCC with a Loksound 5 XL. I have done many LGB diesels but this is my first steam loco. I have been removing all LGB boards when I do conversions and just wiring directly to the 5XL and that has worked well.

This particular LGB decoder has a 5 pin output on the existing LGB decoder board labeled ‘speed’ (see pic, it’s the gray connector). I haven’t seen this on any diesels and I don’t know what it is used for. There are separate motor and track wires. It is wired into another connector above the motor box, but that’s where the documentation ends.

I am thinking I just ignore it, but not sure. Any ideas? Thanks.

It may well be for "chuff" synchronisation between motion and sound, using a wheel sensor.

I think that is indeed it. The Loksound decoder claims to have that capability built in, along with some synchronization. I’m going to just ignore the connector.
