Where anything to do with safety, pressure, and valves are concerned, I much prefer to leave it to folks who know what they are doing, and have the necessary equipment to sort them out.

'kay.......Mr Darby sent me notification of the rectifications he has had to make to my ailing locomotive.

It begins with replacing the missing blast pipe [!] How the heck did THAT happen?

Both safety valves reset to 75 psi and fettled.

Boiler tested and certificated iaw current rules.

New gauge glass.

'Thrombosed' steam lines unbunged.

Servo action to throttle re-arranged to give more throw at the throttle end.

Job done.

It now runs just the way it did way back when. Meanwhile, I'll be looking for that missing blast pipe......anyone here got it?

Thanks, Mr Darby, and for the more-than-reasonable charge, too. :)

Blast pipe - on a gas fired? o_O

I have a loco I made using a C type boiler which runs on gas and this has a blast pipe and blower, it does need a fan to get it going but once it reaches 20 psi the blower takes over to about 40psi by this time everything is nicely warmed up and the burner will stay alight and runs like any gas fired loco with its own built in chuff.

Just in case anybody is interested, here is the short video clip of the successful running after the de-gunging of the steam pipes and few other odds and s*ds.

IMO the NG/G16 is the Queen of 16mm Beyer-Garratts. The RH Darjeeling Type D is very nice, but it ain't a double 2-6-2, and only 3/4 the size of the Accucraft model, too.

Here it is in action on a friend's beautiful track near Grantham- with close-ups of all that wonderful, fully-working Walschaert valve gear in motion.

When it was new it had to be the 16mm live-steam bargain of the century. I was working in Japan when my pal Zubi told me that there was a maroom livery version on Youtube - I just HAD to have one of my own, and here it be's.

Update....

Between weather and the inevitable list of honey-do's, I didn't get around to testing out my recently fettled B-G until this afternoon, and even that was cut short by a rainstorm.

Basically, mrs tac and I hied over to chuffed2bits premises a week past yesterday, and collected the loco after the fixes I noted earlier. This run today was the result -

The run was a great success, and I can truthishly state that I don't recall the loco EVER running as well as this before. The pressure came up to 50-ish in around eight-nine minutes. I had left open the cylinder drains as Mr Darby had suggested and had half-filled the tender with warmish water. As the SVs blew, I opened the throttle and away it went, as smooth as could be. I ran, light in both directions, for just under 48 minutes, and stopped due to rain - I bet I could have hit the hour with care. I noted, too, that the top speed was FAR in excess of anything previously experienced, probably as a result of a revised throttle action. Its response was very smooth, just like the real thing, and starts and slow-downs were both achieved to scale speeds - a real delight to drive. It seemed to be VERY economical with water, too, and the glass was still showing a healthy amount when I shut down in the pouring rain. Pressure held at a steady 50psi for the whole run, with only the very slightest feathering from the SVs showing.

All in all, I'm VERY pleased with the work carried out, and have no hesitation about recommending chuffed2bits to anybody looking to get their loco going properly.

I'll be posting a video of it in action on our much larger Ramsey track as soon as I get the chance to do so.

The loco is a fitting tribute to that fine gentleman, Donald Pearse, who designed it in the first place. It was his last model and he was so proud of it. Mine bears his name on the front water tank, 'Donald Pearse CME'. I guess that we'll never see anything like it again for the money - a modern-day version might well hit the £8000 mark.

They can be a mite finicky, but once they are working properly they are a joy to watch. It is always at the centre of attention on running days. Here it is running last year with a couple of Rob Bushill's excellent Swift16 coaches....
